چکیده

AANA Journal  June 2011  Vol. 79, No. 3 181 Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC), also called stressinduced cardiomyopathy, is a rare type of nonischemic cardiomyopathy accompanied by a transient ballooning and akinesis of the left ventricle. It has been reported mainly in the Japanese literature, although awareness is increasing in the United States and Europe. The reason for the increased incidence in postmenopausal women remains unclear, as does why the apex and left ventricular midcavity are commonly affected. The degree of symptom presentation and severity varies widely and is usually accompanied by an unremarkable medical history. The most frequent presentation is left ventricular dysfunction with or without pulmonary edema. Identifying signs and symptoms and its correlation with physical or emotional stress will lead to early diagnosis and intervention. This case report describes a premenopausal woman in whom TC developed in the immediate postoperative period following general anesthesia.

Reverse takotsubo cardiomyopathy: after an episode of serotonin syndrome.

Stress-induced cardiomyopathy is characterized by transient left ventricular dysfunction, usually followed by complete resolution. It is precipitated by severe stress, and the most common variant (takotsubo) is marked by apical hypokinesis and ballooning with basal hyperkinesis. Serotonin syndrome is best understood as excess serotonergic activity in the central and peripheral nervous system. T...

Takotsubo-Like Severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction After Cesarean Delivery in a 28-Year Old Woman

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy typically affects post-menopausal women who experience severe psychological or physical stress. It can also develop after medical procedures or surgery. Although the underlying mechanism has not been clearly elucidated, catecholamine overload is one of the most plausible etiologies. Herein we report a case of takotsubo-like left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in a 28-year...

Rupture of Right Ventricular Free Wall Following Ventricular Septal Rupture in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy with Right Ventricular Involvement

Most patients diagnosed with takotsubo cardiomyopathies are expected to almost completely recover, and their prognosis is excellent. However, complications can occur in the acute phase. We present a case of a woman with takotsubo cardiomyopathy with right ventricular involvement who developed a rupture of the right ventricular free wall following ventricular septal rupture, as a consequence of ...

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy after General Anesthesia

To the Editor:—I enjoyed reading the case report about Takotsubo cardiomyopathy after general anesthesia by Gavish et al. in the September 2006 issue of ANESTHESIOLOGY. It is noteworthy that another case report of postoperative Takotsubo-like left ventricular dysfunction that occurred in France was published in the same month in the September 2006 issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia and was accompa...
